Could Whey Protein Be the Cause of Your Acne Breakouts?

Whey Protein is a staple supplement for anyone who trains hard as it’s concentrated formula delivers approximately 30g protein per serving to aid faster muscle growth & repair, increase lean muscle mass, not to mention may even help promote weight loss. With so many benefits, it’s no wonder the supplement is popular among keen sportspeople.

But scientists have begun to examine the link between whey protein and acne. Studies have found whey protein increases the insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1). IGF-1 hormone not only supports muscle growth, but has been found to increase sebum production, hence the possibility that whey protein causes acne.

Now, when it comes to acne, hormones and genetics are usually to blame, but as we know, diet can affect skin too. In fact, milk and dairy are two known offenders for increasing sebum production in the body. Whey is a by-product of the cheese making process and this fact again reiterates the theory behind whey protein causing acne breakouts.

As with everything, dairy products will not affect everyone in the same way, but if your acne breakouts started or worsened since you introduced whey protein into your diet then consider discontinuing use.

Help: Clear Skin If your acne does not improve once you cease using whey protein don’t despair!
