Over-Indulgence in chocolate, alcohol and other salty/sugary treats is a common occurrence around this time of year but unfortunately, this can reflect poorly on skin. Luckily here are some tips on effective skin care over the festive season so you can look your best every day.

So what are we doing wrong when it comes to our skin?

The combination of excessive alcohol consumption, late nights and party food causes dehydration. Dehydration causes skin to become dry and sensitive. A bad place to be for acne prone skin as this will cause skin to overproduce sebum, increasing the likelihood of breakouts. Sugars from these foods and drinks also break down collagen levels in the skin, effectively damaging it. Salty party foods can also lead to dehydration causing puffy eyes and a bloated face. And a poor diet can adversely affect gut health which as a result leads to poor skin health.

So how do we take care of our skin to make sure these things don’t happen?

Prep your skin before heading to the party

Eat well in the days leading up to the party and if you can, try and make time for exercise a few hours before as this should help you make healthier food choices before heading out. On the day, drink plenty of water and eat a balanced meal – try not to just grab a snack or fast food before leaving out.  Foods rich in vitamin C such as citrus fruits help protect skin as well as help improve collagen production – not break it down, so be sure to try and add such snacks into your day.

During and after the party

Alternate your alcoholic drinks with water throughout the night to avoid dehydration (which should also help combat the dreaded headache in the morning). Drink water again when you get home, taking a glass to bed in case you’re overcome by thirst in the night. Remove any make-up and apply a light non-comedogenic moisturiser to help support skin health.

Drink Water

We have mentioned this but let’s reiterate it. Alcohol is dehydrating and can make skin look dull and tired. Toxin build up in the body can hinder liver function and its ability to cleanse which can show in our face making it appear tired and washed-out. For effective skin care, hydrating with 6-8 glasses of water per day should do the trick (and if you can drink 6-8 alcoholic beverages a day over Christmas, you can easily do this).

Apply Hydrating Skin Care Products for Effective Skin Care

Use a cleanser that is gentle and able to cleanse your skin without disrupting the skin barrier otherwise you will increase water loss from skin leaving it dry and irritated. Apply a moisturiser that will attract water to the skin, so contains a something that retains moisture, such as glycerine or hyaluronic acid. Make sure it is non-comedogenic though to avoid clogged pores.

Sleep

Allow yourself a few nights to catch up on lost sleep. A lack of sleep can result in dark circles around the eyes, puffy eyes, dry skin and produce an all-round non radiant complexion. Follow these tips for effective skin care over the festive season to look your best for every party and family gathering.

Have a wonderful Christmas and we shall be back in the New Year!
