Catch up on your beauty sleep…

February 16, 2011 by Works with Water

Working, socialising, drinking, eating, dancing, shopping… gosh, how exhausting it all can be! The one thing you could be missing out on is sleep and this can seriously hinder your hectic lifestyle. Being sleep deprived can make us grumpy and can impact our skin and even health.

The amount of necessary sleep varies from person to person, with some breezing through their days on just a few hours’ slumber and others barely functioning without a full 10 hours. But most people need between about seven and nine hours, with studies indicating that an increased risk for disease starts to kick in when people get less than six or seven.

There is also evidence which suggests that lack of sleep really may make us more prone to catching colds and the flu as sleep deprivation suppresses our immune system function. And getting ill is the last thing anyone needs…

Sleep is also a powerful anti-ageing elixir. After only a few days of sleep deprivation, the body undergoes changes similar to “fast-forward” ageing: memory loss, metabolism problems, and poor athletic performance (including your ‘athletic’ performances on the dance floor!).

In addition, getting enough sleep will improve the overall texture of the skin, leaving your complexion looking plump and radiant. While sleeping, the skin is not only renewed but also restored. Harmful effects caused by the environment and other factors including stress are reversed.

The effects of sleep deprivation clearly show on the delicate skin just beneath the eyes as it is thinner than any other part of your skin. It can lead to the formation of dark circles, wrinkles, puffy eye bags and fine lines. Some special skin care treatments and products may alter the adverse effects of lack of sleep, but none can compare with a good night’s sleep which is much cheaper too.

So, getting enough sleep may feel like a waste of time, but it will give you the endurance (and radiant complexion!) to survive a busy life…
