Are you making mistakes with your acne skin care regime?

If you’re suffering from a breakout you’ll be tempted to blast your skin with every acne treatment you can find, but don’t! It’s easy to make mistakes treating acne or even make it worse, despite your best intentions.

Mistake 1: Not giving your acne treatment time to work
Skin reacts slow to treatment so there is no overnight fix. Even if the acne came on fast it still requires time to heal. Which, according to dermatologist Barbara Reed MD, can take between 6 and 12 weeks. Remember acne is not an infection it is an inflammation and it can even get worse before it gets better.

Mistake 2: Trying too many products at once
People usually layer on products when they don’t get results in the first few days of treatment. This can lead to skin irritations and could potentially cause further outbreaks and drying of the skin.

Mistake 3: Over scrubbing or over cleansing
Scrubbing the skin will actually worsen acne, as it can compromise the skin’s protective barrier (stripping the skin of its essential oils) and increase irritation. Remember acne is not from dirt!

Mistake 4: Choosing the wrong product for acne prone skin
Harsh cleansers, alkaline bar soaps, and alcohol-based products may worsen acne instead look for “noncomedogenic” or “for acne-prone skin” products, including make-up. Noncomedogenic products don’t contain ingredients that tend to clog pores in people with acne-prone skin.

Mistake 5: Popping and Picking at Pimples
Popping and picking pimples prolongs healing time and raises the risk of scarring. Infected material can get pushed further into the skin, leading to more swelling and redness.

Mistake 6: Not getting to the root of the problem
The key to healthy skin isn’t just dealing with the symptoms — like lathering on potions and lotions, popping and pricking pimples, or taking antibiotics or other medications. There’s a better way. Good Skin Comes from the Inside Out, Not the Outside In!
