It’s International Happiness Day and that is definitely a day to celebrate. After all, feeling happy is what really matters; it’s the key to your physical and mental health. But are there simple tricks to improve your sense of happiness?

There may well be. Research has shown that gratitude is a great indicator of happiness. So, rather than always striving for more and better and feeling that you haven’t achieved ‘it’ yet, it’s important to stand still from time to time and acknowledge the good things in your life. This positive affirmations will become part of your mindset of how you see the world, improving your ability to savour positive life experiences, whilst in the process reducing the impact of negative emotions.

Another way of helping you to switch off from negative thoughts and appreciate the here and now is through meditation. It’s simply calming down the mind and let it wander without attaching much thought to anything. This sounds more complicated than it is as you may be doing this already during the day, for instance when you are on the train or having a bath. These moments of stillness help you to be more calm and patient in life and aren’t these characteristics anyone can benefit from?

When suffering from acne-prone, problem skin, it can make you feel negative and even depressed. Practicing techniques such as meditation can help you  relax and to have a more positive outlook on your skin condition.

As the Dalai Lama once said: ‘Happiness is not something readymade. It comes from your own actions…’
