5 Top Tips To Get Your Skin Summer Ready

April 24, 2017 by Samantha Martin
Next month is Sun Awareness Month, so what better time to start thinking ahead to the summer and getting your skin summer ready with help: clear skin

The weather may have taken a turn for the worse lately and the sun seems a distant memory. But next month is Sun Awareness Month, so what better time to start thinking ahead to the summer and getting your skin summer ready.

May is a time when the weather hopefully starts to improve and we start to think ahead to our summer holidays. Lazy beach days, dips in the pool to cool off and clothing that shows off a little bit more skin than your winter woollies you’ve spent the last 6 months in.

Here are our top tips to get your skin prepped and ready to hit the beach. Or at least just be ready to see the sunshine if we get any at home this year.

  1. Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!

Exfoliating removes any dead skin that lingers on the surface of your skin looking dull, dry and clogging up your pores. If you’ve not been scrubbing your dead skin away over the winter months then chances are you’ve got quite a build up. Invest in a good body scrub that contains a natural ingredient like salt or sugar (not beads, you can read our thoughts on beads here). The skin on your face, neck and chest is thinner so use something that’s gentle on these areas, to the rest of your body. You’ll also want to remove any dead skin before you start using moisturisers and sun creams to ensure your pores aren’t clogged up with excess oils that will lead to breakouts.

  1. Hydrate and Moisturise

Once you’ve removed all the dead skin your skin will be dry from being covered up all winter. Applying moisturiser after exfoliating will help lock moisture into your skin to help keep it soft. Make sure you don’t miss dry spots such as your elbows and heels too. As the weather gets hotter and you get thirsty in the heat, so does your skin. Make sure you keep up your water intake not only to prevent hydration that will leave you feeling unwell but also to replace lost moisture lost through sweating and keeping your skin hydrated. You can read about this here. If you’re tempted to overdo the sun exposure to get a quick tan, rather than risking your skin’s health, try using a natural tinted moisturiser to give you a gradual glow without the sun damage.

  1. Protect!

It’s no good having super clean and soft skin if you’re then going to expose it to hours on end of dangerous UVA rays from the sun. Studies have shown that most people don’t use enough sun protection cream as they should. Firstly, make sure you are using a higher strength factor than you think you need. You may be able to withstand the heat, but your skin probably can’t withstand the bombarding of dangerous rays that can cause premature ageing, the stripping of barrier lipids, inflammation and melanoma. Use a high factor sun cream and reapply every two hours. Stay out of the strong midday sun, wear a hat and keep areas of your skin more susceptible to burning, covered up if you are outside for long periods of time.

  1. Repair

Any signs of skin damage from the sun should be dealt with swiftly. Apply a natural cooling balm to help soothe the skin as soon as possible. Something that is aloe-vera based will also help reduce redness and inflammation. Damage from the sun can also cause the production of reactive oxygen molecules that affect healthy cell growth and the stimulation of collagen destructing enzymes. It’s important to replace some of the natural goodness your skin will lose from sun damage so using products with age fighting ingredients will help lessen the damage.

  1. Prevent Skin Problems

If you suffer from acne, spots and skin problems then you may dread summer. Stressing about your skin is probably going to lead to further breakouts.
