4 Reasons Men Should Moisturize

June 25, 2019 by Samantha Smith

This is a guest blog post by Jeff Oxford, a health and beauty expert for Marlowe skin-care.

Do you know that men, just like women, need to moisturize daily? It pays to have a good skin-care routine regardless of your gender, because having nice skin can be a massive confidence booster. A moisturizer helps retain your youthful glow, and if you’re a manly man with vices such as smoking and drinking, there’s a good chance you’ll always look older than your same-aged peers do.

Also, like women, men are never too young to start using a moisturizer. In fact, it is recommended you start as early as you can, like during puberty or in your late teens. While men usually feel like their skin is the least of their concerns, here are very good reasons they should moisturize:

It Makes You Look Healthier

It’s 2019, and men nowadays aren’t afraid that self-care will take away their masculinity. Moisturizing your skin is a form of self-care, and while it won’t undo years of sun damage or scars, it can help replenish your skin’s moisture and make it look smoother, resulting in an overall healthier look. Whether your skin type is dry, oily, or combination, everyone can benefit from using a moisturizer daily.

Prevents Signs of Aging

As you get older, your skin ages too. With advanced years comes fine lines, age spots, and wrinkles. You can prevent all those by not letting your skin dry, which can make it more prone to losing its elasticity and advanced aging.

As you go about your day, your skin loses moisture. Whether from taking a bath and using strong soaps, being exposed to dry winter air or air-conditioning, or simply being under the heat of the sun, you’ll need a moisturizer to restore the protective barrier of your skin. When you are hydrated and your skin is moisturized, your skin looks plumper, and that helps smoothen out the forming wrinkles, delay their appearance in the long run.

Prevents Acne and Congestion

Men have stronger skin than women do, but that doesn’t mean a man’s skin is not susceptible to clogged pores and breakouts. When you don’t hydrate enough with water or make your skin moisturized, there’s a big chance that your skin will be congested with gunk like excess sebum, which can contribute to acne and clogged pores.

The reason is that the skin is the largest excretory organ and it needs moisture to push out the oil out of the surface to help keep the skin supple. It is a natural process and can be affected by the dry condition of the skin.

Keeps the Skin Firm

Your skin needs all the help it can get, and apart from aging wreaking havoc on it, there’s also gravity that’s making it sag every minute. The reason for sagging is that the body can no longer produce as much elastin and collagen due to aging and other circumstances. Saggy skin is one of the most popular telltale signs of aging, but a moisturizer can help bring back some of the skin’s elasticity.

What Face Moisturizer Works Best?

There’s no one answer to this because everybody’s skin is different. On the bright side, there are products that cater to a variety of skin types, including dry, oily, and everything in between. As for what it can do, a good moisturizer must be able to sufficiently moisturize your skin. Look out for ingredients like hyaluronic acid or vitamin E.

A moisturizer should be able to give your skin some protection to keep it away from bad elements such as dirt, dust, and oil. Look for jojoba oil in the ingredients list.

So when do you apply face moisturizer? Ideally, it should be after washing the face. You want your face to be clean of sweat, dust, dirt, and oil before you moisturize it. If you skip the face-wash step, the trapped impurities and bacteria in your skin may aggravate it.

Add Sunscreen to Your Regimen

Moisturizing is just part of a good skin-care regimen. If you want to prevent aging even more, you need to get in the habit of wearing sunscreen. Similar to the moisturizer, a sunscreen is also antiaging, but instead of replenishing the body’s moisturizer, it protects you from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. A good sunscreen also has extra beneficial ingredients for various skin types, like antioxidants.
