help: clear skin - Understanding the causes of acne

Acne is a dermatologic condition; the largest occurrence is associated with acne vulgaris affecting 85% of young adults age 12-24 years.

Acne is one of the most recognisable skin condition which causes social embarrassment, acne associated physical and psychological scarring and can be life changing.

What is acne?

Many people ask “what is acne” and do I actually have the condition?  Acne Vulgaris is a simple identifiable dermatological condition that starts when oil and dead skin cells clog up your pores. The most common names for acne are blackheads, blemishes, whiteheads, pimples, spots or zits. When you have just a few red spots or pimples, you have what’s termed a mild form of acne.  Severe acne can mean hundreds of pimples that can cover the face, neck, chest and back. Or it can be larger, solid red lumps that are painful, and these are known as cysts.

How does acne form?

Acne vulgaris starts with the formation of a microcomedo as shown in the diagram. Stage two consists of non-inflammatory lesions, closed comedones (whiteheads) and open comedones (blackheads). The non-inflammatory lesions can turn into inflammatory lesions. Dependent on the degree of severity, the inflammatory lesion range comprises of papules, pustules and nodulocystic lesions.

The stimulus for microcomedo formation is still uncertain. The strongest leads implicate androgen hormones, alterations in follicular linoleic acid levels, and the inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1a. Other factors, such as genetic predisposition, stress, and diet, may also affect the development and severity of acne.

Is there a cure for acne?

There is no cure for acne, however acne can be successfully treated and controlled with the right treatment routine. Doctors and dermatologists can recommend medication that will help tackle acne but they are not a cure, so even after your skin is clear and breakouts are a thing of the past you must continue to use your medications regularly to keep acne from returning.

Causes of acne

A few small studies have shown a correlation between certain food groups and acne severity, such as dairy products and carbohydrates with a high glycemic index as possible causes of acne.  However there aren’t any foods that are proven to actually cause acne.  A diet high in protein and carbohydrates with a low glycemic index has been shown to improve acne breakouts.

What are the present therapeutic approaches to acne and the causes of acne?

Either topical or systemic therapies are the main therapeutic options for the treatment of acne.

Dependent upon the severity of the lesions, a single or combined therapy is suggested.  In general, topical and systemic therapies aim to inhibit hyperkeratosis (thickening of the outer layer of the skin), follicular plugging, diminishment of sebum production and reduction of bacteria and inflammation.

The main active compounds of therapies in gel, cream or liquid formulations consist of retinoids and antibiotics.  Hormonal treatment is occasionally used for most types of acne in both adult and adolescent females.  However these types of therapies are often accompanied by adverse side effects.

Whatever the type of acne or perceived cause of acne, it’s important to seek out the right type of treatment to alleviate the long term affects.

Clinical Studies

The positive effects of lactoferrin on acne has been proven in clinical studies on acne sufferers who showed visible changes including fewer blemishes, a reduction in the amount of redness and less oiliness.

The median improvement was:

The positive effects of lactoferrin on acne

Below are the results of example consumer and clinical research studies proving the benefits of lactoferrin as a skin treatment on both Asian and Caucasian skin types when consumed daily over a period of 4 to 8 weeks.

Consumer research study 1 – test market group

Evaluating lactoferrin as a dietary supplement for the support of a healthy complexion

Forty-four participants, for whom other so called ‘acne cures’ had proven ineffective, but who shared the desire to be acne-free, were enrolled in the study  (223 males and 21 females).  For 8 weeks the subjects were supplemented with 200mg lactoferrin.  Photographs taken by an independent photographer were blinden and evaluated by an independent dermatologist.

Subject data were collected at week 0 (baseline), which occurred before supplementation started, as well as at weeks 2, 4 and 8.  The number of blackheads (open comedones) and non-blackheads (including whiteheads, closed comedones, papules, pustules and nodulocystic lesions) were counted on the forehead, left cheek, right cheek, chin and nose.  For each subject, blackheads and non-blackheads were summed over the facial regions each week.

After stopping lactoferrin supplementation at week 8, the number of blemishes started to increase as measured by an increased number of blemishes at week 12.

Over 76% of the participants observed visible improvements, including fewer blemishes, a reduction in the amount of redness and less oiliness.

About PravENAC™

Unique PravENAC formula

PravENAC™ is a proprietary Lactoferrin–based anti-acne supplement specifically formulated to help improve skin. The active ingredients in the formula include aloe vera and zinc gluconate and they provide antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to help you achieve and maintain normal acne-free skin.

What is Lactoferrin?

Lactoferrin is produced by a proprietary process that derives a bioactive complex from whey rich in the lactoferrin fraction. Milk’s many bioactive components have specific physiological effects to support a healthy complexion from the inside.

Lactoferrin is present naturally in our exocrine secretions: milk, tears, nasal exudate, bronchial mucus, gastrointestinal fluids and saliva.  A primary function of lactoferrin is scavenging free iron in body fluids and inflamed sites to suppress free radical-mediated damage (much like an antioxidant) and diminish availability of the element to invading microbes.

How does it work?

PravENAC powder on spoon - help: clear skin

Lactoferrin works in two ways. Firstly it inhibits the growth of propionibacterium which is present on most people’s skin and responsible for acne, spots and blemishes, thereby lessening the number of new skin irritants forming.  Secondly its anti-inflammatory properties mean that the size of blemishes is reduced and the blemishes health quicker, resulting in a smoother complexion.

Can Lactoferrin help with scarring?

Yes - lactoferrin helps repair damaged cells caused by acne and spots, although it must be taken daily for a period of several weeks before you will see the longer term benefit.

Can Lactoferrin help to lighten my skin?

Yes, again, taken daily over a period of several weeks it will help even out skin tone and provide a natural skin-lightening benefit

Is PravENAC™ an acne cure?

The combination of these pure and natural nutraceutical ingredients in the PravENAC™  formulation  helps reduce the symptoms of acne by reducing the bacteria associated with this debilitating skin condition through its anti-microbial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

What our customers say...

Dr Sarah Brewer

Milk protein contains lactoferrin which reduces the growth of causative bacteria and improves skin inflammation. Taking a product that contains dairy peptides offers a natural and effective approach to treatment (of skin problems)..."

Dr Sarah Brewer - The Natural Health Guru says:

Although acne is often thought of as a teenage problem, a significant number of adults in their 30's and 40's are affected, too. Dairy peptides contain immune-boosting substances, such as lactoferrin, which can reduce the growth of the causative bacteria and improve skin inflammation. This is great news for those having to cope with the emotional and physical discomfort associated with recurrent skin blemishes. Taking a product that contains dairy peptides offers a natural and effective approach to treatment. Sadly, drinking milk itself does not work as milk contains additional hormones that can make acne worse."

What is PravENAC™?

PravENAC™ is our proprietary formulation which contains a bioactive milk protein, rich in lactoferrin. Lactoferrin has been clinically proven to help reduce acne blemishes and help you maintain a healthy clear skin box and powder on spoon

How does it work?

Lactoferrin works in two ways. Firstly, it inhibits the growth of the propionibacterium, which is present on most people's skin and responsible for acne, thereby lessening the number of new skin blemishes forming. Secondly its anti-inflammatory properties mean that the size of spots is reduced and blemishes heal quicker resulting in a smoother complexion.

What scientific evidence exists to prove its effectiveness?

The effects of dietary supplementation with lactoferrin have been proven in several studies with teenage consumers with a median decrease of complexion blemishes by 71 per cent after one month and 95 per cent after two months.

Is PravENAC™ still effective once in water, other beverages or soft foods?

Pravenac is a water soluble milk protein complex which means that its solubility characteristics allow it to dissolve in water, beverages or soft foods whilst retaining its effectiveness.

Can the ingredients in help: clear skin help with acne scarring?

Yes, help: clear skin is formulated with ingredients that can help repair damaged cells caused by spots and blemishes.

Is help: clear skin a cure for acne?

No, there is currently no natural cure for acne. However, using help: clear skin as part of your skincare regime will help reduce the bacteria associated with skin blemishes through its antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Positive results are usually seen in as little as 4-6 weeks but you will have to keep taking help: clear skin to continue to maintain a healthy complexion.

Lactoferrin is derived from milk, doesn’t milk cause acne?

The link between milk and acne is in its early stages but it is thought that the natural hormones contained within milk, which are similar to those produced during the teenage years, are what can cause acne.

Lactoferrin is a protein that has been derived from the milk, but it has been processed to such a degree that none of the hormones remain.

I have a milk allergy. Can I still take help: clear skin?

Most milk allergies are caused by milk proteins, essentially the milk whey and casein. Although lactoferrin is not exactly milk whey and casein, it is made up of its components which means, to be on the safe side, we say that help: clear skin is unsuitable for people with milk allergies.

However, Lactose (milk sugar) intolerance is a much bigger issue and most people confuse lactose intolerance with milk allergies. PravENAC™ does not contain any lactose, so help: clear skin is suitable for anyone lactose intolerant.

How many sachets of help: clear skin do I need to take every day to see a difference?

In clinical trials, participants took 100mg and 200mg of lactoferrin each day. help: clear skin contains 200mg of lactoferrin in each 3.5g sachet so you need to consume 1 sachet every day to see the same effects.

What other ingredients are in help: clear skin?

High Extract Aloe Vera which has a smoothing and nourishing effect on the skin.

Zinc Gluconate which is important for protein synthesis and to support immune function.

Oligofructose which is a natural source of soluble fibre derived from the chicory root. Increasing fibre intake enables your body to expel toxins that negatively affect skin.

Does help: clear skin contain preservatives?

No. help: clear skin is completely preservative free.

How many calories in each sachet serving?

Only 5 calories per 3.5g serving.

Can I take help: clear skin if I am diabetic?

help: clear skin contains no flavourings or sweeteners so is completely safe to consume if you are diabetic.

Can I take help: clear skin if I am pregnant?

As with any dietary supplement product, it is important to consult a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant or nursing.

Is help: clear skin effective against hormonal acne?

PravENAC™ has no specific effect on hormone induced acne. It works in essentially 3 ways - put simply these are:

1. Limiting of the growth of the acne bacteria.
2. Reducing the blemishes associated with acne blemishes.
3. Assisting in the repair of damaged skin cells caused by blemishes.

Hormone associated acne is caused by hormonal imbalances due to high levels of androgens and testosterone - a condition that can only be treated medically.

However, one of the byproducts of this imbalance is an increase in oily skin which unfortunately is a good breeding ground for bacteria which can amplify the underlying effects.

PravENAC™ will have an effect in this area and will therefore still have a benefit... and can be of benefit in assisting in the repair of damaged skin cells caused by blemishes.

How soon should I begin to see an improvement in my skin?

Taking 1 sachet of help: clear skin everyday, you should begin to see a significant improvement within 4-6 weeks.

Will I be completely acne free eventually?

Although we cannot guarantee that you will be acne free, clinical trials on lactoferrin show that you are statistically likely to see a significant reduction in blemishes.

Are there any side effects associated with help: clear skin?

There are no side effects associated with help: clear skin or any of its ingredients. However, if you generally consume a diet high in fibre, you may experience a slight bloating effect due to the fibre content. Remember, Oligofructose is a natural soluble fibre – so an added benefit if you struggle to maintain the recommended level of fibre in your daily diet.

Can help: clear skin aid Psoriasis?

During the past 15 years there has been strong evidence due to some well conducted studies indicating that Aloe Vera is a proven natural cure for psoriasis.

Aloe Vera extract has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties whose helpful aspects are further enhanced by its anti-inflammatory properties. The inner leaf gel of the Aloe Vera plant inhibits streptococcus bacteria, making it particularly useful when ingested for detoxification and digestive support. Aloe Vera, with its myriad applications in reducing inflammation, addressing pathogens and restoring balanced bowel function may plant a crucial role in the prevention of illnesses that may usher in psoriasis outbreaks.

Is the Lacoferrin in help: clear skin free from BSE/TSE?

The milk used in the production of the lactoferrin is sourced solely from Australian and New Zealand accredited herds which are fully free from BSE/TSE risks - this grade of lactoferrin is so pure that it is currently used in infant formula and therefore produced under the strictest standards in the global food industry.
