Did you know the skin covers a total surface area of approximately 1.65 m2 and weighs in total about 9.5kg; which makes it the largest and heaviest organ of the human body? It’s there to protect your body from damage, infection and drying out. So be kind to the skin you’re in!
Your skin has three layers:
- The epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone.
- The dermis, beneath the epidermis, contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands.
- The deeper subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis) is made of fat and connective tissue.
Each of the structures that comprise the skin have a wide variety of functions; all of these functions must be in order if we are to maintain good skin health. Remember it is not just what you do to it on the outside, it is just as important to look after your skin from within.
Now do you want to know how to look after this most precious organ? Here are a few tips…
- Have a good cleaning regime, but don’t be too harsh as that will cause inflammation and possible acne breakouts.
- Wear a good moisturiser every day to reinforce your skin’s natural rehydration process.
- Keep your skin well protected if you are in the sun. Sun damage can lead to premature ageing of the skin, wrinkles, marks, dry skin, and even skin cancer over time.
- Keep well hydrated with plenty of water to provide good moisture for all your organs. It will help flush out the toxins in your body.
- Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables include fruits such as berries, red grapes, avocados oily fish etc., they will give you glowing, vibrant, and, yes, younger-looking skin!
- Have a balanced diet. Everything you eat becomes a part of not only your inner being, but the outer fabric of your body as well. The healthier the foods are that you consume, the better your skin will look.
- Cut out caffeine and highly processed foods and drinks including sodas – they could be the cause of skin breakouts, dark circles, wrinkles, dehydrated skin and will lead to premature ageing.
- Enjoy regular exercise to ensure a good circulation to the skin for feeding it and removing the build-up of toxins.
