Co Enzyme Q10

We’re taking a closer look at the latest scientific research into Co Enzyme Q10 and the natural anti-ageing benefits it delivers when ingested as a food supplement. CoQ10 has strong scientific backing and receives significant media attention as it is widely used in topical creams as an anti-ageing ingredient.  However it’s long been determined that CoQ10 is more effective when ingested in supplement form when delivered at optimal daily dosage.

Natural skincare supplements are becoming extremely popular as people become more aware of the need to feed skin from within. This means however that it’s important to be aware of the research into which ingredients can actually deliver the results that a skincare product – either topical or ingested – claims it can achieve.

CoQ10 is a natural antioxidant and  occurs naturally in the skin. However, over time production levels decline. Whilst CoQ10 may help reduce wrinkles when applied as a topical cream onto your skin, it’s far more effective and can be delivered in much stronger dosage in supplement form.

A recent study in cooperation with the Higher School of Applied Sciences in Slovenia assessed the effect of the dietary intake of coenzyme Q10 on skin parameters and condition and the results of a placebo-controlled human study aimed to find out just how much more effective CoQ10 is when it’s ingested rather than applied and the results were very positive.

In the study, 33 middle aged volunteers took part in a 12 week randomised, placebo-controlled double blind trial. They were split into three equal groups. One received a high dose of CoQ10 (150mg per day), the second received a low dose of CoQ10 (50mg per day) and the final placebo group received a sugar substitute.

The results of the study proved that long-term CoQ10 taken in dietary supplement form improves skin conditions, evens out skin, increases firmness and gave participants a significant reduction in periorbital wrinkles around the eye area.

Whilst the  results were very impressive, interestingly, they were achieved with relatively low dosages of CoQ10 (50mg – 150mg per day) which is considerable less than help: beautify skin which contains 1000mg of CoQ10 per day delivered in 2 x 10g daily servings.  This provides those of us who are concerned about and seeking natural solutions to wrinkles, uneven skin tone and the signs of ageing with a much higher daily dosage than these recent  trial dosages to give the most effective results within a matter of weeks. Even taking just one sachet of help: beautify skin per day delivers 500mg of CoQ10.
