Foundation for acne

It can be tricky to find the best foundation for acne, because we know that you’re keen to cover up those pesky imperfections and even out your skin tone. However, you don’t want your foundation to feel like it’s clogging up your pores – some oil-based products are a breeding ground for further breakouts.

The key is to figure out what you want from a foundation. If coverage is more important to you than anything else, it makes sense to opt for a thick foundation with plenty of powder and concealer layered onto your problem areas afterwards.

On the other hand, if you’d rather opt for a product with acne-fighting abilities and don’t mind some redness showing through, get your hands on a foundation specially formulated for people with blemishes and give the concealer a miss.

We’ve collected together our top tips for choosing the best foundation for acne, as well as some useful application methods and our all-important pick of the three best foundations on the high street for acne prone skin.

Or, if you want to get straight in to our recommendations on the best foundation for acne prone skin, scroll down for our top three.

Finding the best foundation for acne

When you’re on the hunt for the best foundation for acne, it’s important to know what kind of skin you have. Is it oily? Dry? Or a little bit of both?

Most people with acne have oily or combination skin. This means their skin produces a lot of sebum, either all over their face or in specific ‘problem zones’, which are usually the forehead, nose and chin.

The challenge is to find a product that covers up your imperfections, but doesn’t leave your face feeling too weighed-down, or your problem areas looking too greasy.

Foundation coverage for acne prone skin

The coverage of your foundation is probably one of the most important considerations when you’re looking for a new foundation for your acne prone skin.

You need to figure out whether you want heavy, matte coverage, which means thick foundation that’s likely to mask most imperfections. Or lighter coverage with a more dewy finish, which will feel much more natural on your skin, but may only slightly cover up your acne.

We recommend…

Although choosing the best foundation for acne is all down to personal preference, we reommend opting for a medium coverage foundation and then using a lighter concealer to hide any redness or stubborn blemishes once you’ve applied it. From there you can finish off your look with translucent powder, which will banish shine and set your make-up.

Coverage top tip

When applying foundation, concealer and powder always use clean brushes and buff the products gently into your skin. This will make them look much more natural and stop your oily fingertips from making matters worse!

Foundation properties to look out for

Nowadays there are so many make-up products to choose from that it can feel a little overwhelming. So, to help you pick take a look at some of the interesting properties that each product boasts.

Some are made especially for acne-prone skin and will help to reduce redness and keep bacteria at bay. Others have added SPF, which will mean your skin is likely to be more protected in the summer months and many contain light-reflecting pigments to help your skin look more fresh and glowing.

We recommend…

We suggest looking for a foundation specially designed to combat redness and blemishes. This will mean even if it doesn’t have a heavy coverage, it’ll still be working to banish your acne and calm down any redness.

Top tip:

Always opt for products that are oil-free, paraben-free and sulphate-free if you can find them. This means they don’t contain any nasties that are likely to aggravate your skin.

I’ve heard about Bourjouis being a good brand for acne make up, but ironicly, the blush of this brand, is the only one that leaves me a big problem with acne. I am very sad, because they have very nice colors, my favorite in fact!! but every time I use it, my left cheek starts having acne problems 🙁
