Are women from Venus and men from Mars when it comes to skincare?

Male & female skincare

It’s been the basis of self-help books, literature, movies and endless, heated debates. But when it comes to our approach to skincare is there really any truth in the saying that women are from Venus and men are from Mars?

The answer is a resounding yes. Romance, psychology and behaviour aside, there are many differences between male and female skin and how the genders differ in their view and approach to skincare.

The main differences are in the composition and the structure of the skin and these need to be taken into account when considering a topical skincare regime of skin creams and lotions.

An obvious difference is the presence of numerous hair follicles in men’s skin, which tends to give the skin more ‘structure’ and is thought to help keep men’s faces wrinkle free – furthermore the effect of shaving also has an exfoliating effect, so as well as cutting the hair follicles it tends to naturally remove dead skin from the face.

Men generally have thicker skin, as much as 20-25% thicker than women’s skin in fact, due to increased levels of testosterone – as a result, topical products designed for men need to be able to penetrate this barrier to be fully effective and deliver the same benefits as products designed for women. In addition, men’s skin generally has a higher collagen content than women’s, a benefit that generally results in fewer wrinkles. On the downside, this higher level is more susceptible to being damaged by UV radiation from the sun.

Due to the presence of male hormones, men’s skin tends to produce more oil/sebum than women, which increases the risk of blocked pores, blemishes and rashes.

Whilst topical products, such as skin lotions and creams, need to take into account the differences between male and female skin to be most effective, nutraceutical skincare products that are ingested differ. These oral formulations don’t need to take into account specific skin surface structure differences as our bodies absorb the key nutrients via our digestive system.  Increasingly, powders, edible jellies and beverages are formulated to address the skincare needs of both genders with only a change in packaging required as the majority of men respond quite differently to language and images, preferring more masculine colours.

help: clear skin and help: clear skin MEN natural soluble supplements are exactly the  same formulation, only the packaging is different.  Both contain our patented PravENAC™ formula which contains lactoferrin, a bioactive milk protein that is proven to reduce the growth of the bacteria that causes acne, reducing the number and severity of spots and blemishes. The addition of aloe vera, zinc gluconate and oligofructose, a soluble fibre derived from the chicory root, ensure skin is naturally nourished from within.

It’s important to be aware of the needs of our skin and find a natural solution that works from the inside out…whichever planet you’re on!
