All over the news this morning, L’Oreal magazine ads for Lancome and Maybelline foundations have been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority for misleading consumers by enhancing the images of Julia Roberts and Christy Turlington.
Ads for cosmetics have always been about aspiration. Who wouldn’t want to look like Julia or Christy…even on a bad skin day? Yes, we want to believe that we can find beauty in a pot of cream or foundation – but none of us are stupid and we realise it’s all about making the best of what we’ve got; these products help us to feel better, more confident and help us put our best face forward.
However, before you think we’re endorsing airbrushing, here at Works With Water we definitely don’t airbrush our case study ‘after’ pictures. They’re supplied by our help: clear skin case study participants and we use them exactly as submitted to us.
We all want to have clear, blemish-free skin. For some, a pot of foundation is pretty much all we need. For the rest of us, we need a little bit more help.
