As we transition from Spring into the Summer months, there’s one main thought on everyone’s minds: “When do we go on holiday?”. Many people plan and save all year for their annual getaway, which means when it finally comes around there’s a lot of excitement, as well as a lot of pressure to make it perfect, memorable and well worth the wait!
One of the biggest sources of holiday stress is packing and deciding what to take away with you. We all want to pack as light as we can in theory, but what about the home comforts we’ll miss? The clothes we might want at the last minute? The medication there’s a tiny chance we’ll need? And the cosmetics we might feel naked without?
Well, we’re here to help when it comes to skincare. We want you to feel relaxed while you’re away, confident and like you truly look your best. So here are five of the most common skincare mistakes that people make on holiday – and our top tips to avoid them!
1. Panic packing
If you’re prone to leaving packing and sorting out your luggage right up until the last minute, then you might be a skincare panic packer! The big mistake here is throwing loads of skincare products, creams and treatments into your suitcase minutes before you’re due to head to the airport. This will leave your luggage weight down and you’ll have to make sacrifices elsewhere – that’s two less maxi dresses and at least one pair of shoes out the window!
We recommend adopting a strict approach in the run-up to your holiday. The week before you go away, narrow your products right down to essentials and keep them somewhere different in your bathroom and bedroom so you can become really mindful about which you use, which you don’t and which you literally couldn’t live without! This can be a big eye-opening exercise for those who think they’re high-maintenance yet only rely on a few key products on most days.
If you’re left me confused than ever with hundreds of projects in your “must take” pile, then prioritise and seek out smaller, more travel-friendly solutions. Our new beauty jelly, help: beautify skin, comes in tiny tubes that you can pack without sacrificing on any space. Its rejuvenating formula reduces the appearance of wrinkles and leaves skin looking more youthful, plumped up and radiant so you could choose that product over two or three of your standard anti-ageing creams to save on valuable space.
2. Underestimating the sun
Many people throw a suncream into their luggage before heading off on holiday and don’t think much more about it. But a key thing to remember is to make sure you have enough. Many people end up running out of products a day or two before their holiday is over and then skip on protection at the last minute. Although your skin is more used to UV rays toward the end of your travels, you could still get very badly burned.
You also need to pay attention to the SPF you use. Just because you had factor 15 on last year doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start on a sensible factor 40 and work your way to the lower numbers over time. Not only will this approach protect you skin more from redness now, it’ll mean you’re less likely to have sun damage later in life.
3. Packing heavy, oily and non-heat-friendly products
Chances are you’ll be heading off to warmer climes this year when you go away, which means the skincare routine you’re used to here in the UK might not be as effective, oil-free or enjoyable anywhere else. By this we mean your high-maintenance regime could leave your skin feeling sticky, your pores all clogged up and your confidence a little heavy and weighed down too! There’s nothing worse than waking up to sunshine and a fresh face to then slather five layers of cream all over your body.
This is particularly important if you’re prone to acne and blemishes, because the extra sweat from the warm weather can clog up your pores and mix with dirt, sebum and products to create spots. In fact many of our clients say that going away on holiday is when their skin problems can really flare up and become worse than ever.
The answer? Strip your regime right back and avoid products that are too oily or heavy. You may not need their super moisturising properties while you’re away. If you’re keen to take a break from creams, lotions and potions completely, then our help: clear skin acne reducing product is taken as a supplement, which means you can add it to drinks by the pool or a glass of water when you first wake up. Not only does this mean more room to pack clothes and things that matter, but less greasy products clogging up your pores all day when you’re trying to enjoy the sunshine!
4. Sticking to a high-maintenance routine
Sticking to a high-maintenance routine might make you just that… too stick-y! But it might also cause you too much added stress and pressure while you’re away. Why spend hours in the bathroom applying layers of creams when there’s a pool, a beach and so much to do outside?
Not only do you need to make your skincare routine travel-size and non-sticky while you’re away, you also need to make it stress-free. We suggest picking products and treatments that do more than one thing. So just like you’d like a 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner for your hair, grab the skincare equivalent! Creams that have SPF properties and moisture, eye make up remover that’ll also nourish the delicate eye area or a product like our beauty jelly designed to clear your skin and reduce signs of ageing.
5. Neglecting anti-ageing treatments
While we’re speaking of anti-ageing, let’s talk about your current routine. Of course you want to strip it back for your holiday, but what about all of the good work you’ve put in over the past few months and years? If you’re away for any longer than a week you don’t want to neglect it, right?
So prioritise what your key concerns are. You can’t tackle anti-ageing, acne, dry skin and reduce redness all in one go. But you can get smart about cross-purpose products that really suit your needs. The secret is to shop around and find products that tick all of your boxes. Not EVERY box!
